Senior Pets

Around the age of 7 your animal enters his or her senior years. Often, they can begin to develop diseases common to their senior human counterparts, like diabetes, heart disease, endocrine disease and cancer. These diseases can go unnoticed in their early stages; therefore, preventive health care becomes very important.

Click on the pictures below to view copies of pamphlets that contain important information regarding your senior pet and its health care. For quicker download and viewing, they may be viewed as PDF files. If you do not have the Adobe Reader click on the "Get Adobe Reader" icon and you can download for the reader for free. These brochures are also available in our office at Harbor Animal Hospital.

AVOIDING MIX-UPS

When we become ill, we often pick up medication at the pharmacy. Without fail we are handed a bag full of little orange bottles. Each holds a different medicine with different instructions. This can cause confusion and even a serious problem if a mix up occurs. Not only is it hard to keep our medications straight, but those of us with pets know that they sometimes have more medications than us. Medications prescribed to pets are not meant for human consumption and could cause potential health risks. Likewise human medicine can cause problems for pets, even something as simple as an aspirin. We at Harbor Animal Hospital are taking steps to minimize prescription confusion.

Soon we will no longer be using the standard orange pill vials. Instead we will prescribe medications in blue and green bottles. This will allow pet owners to know the difference between human and animal medication at a quick glance. Also all medications dispersed are clearly labeled with the pet’s name and specific instructions on how to give the medications. If there is ever a question about a medication, please contact us. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

We have come along way from the simple paper envelopes that used to hold our medications and hopefully these steps will help decrease the number of accidents involving medication mix-ups.

While visiting our office feel free to pick up some of the helpful guides you see below available there. They are free and cover all aspects of caring for your pet from young animals to adults and seniors.
